Join us in honoring a legacy that transformed our community with a street naming ceremony in Soror Pinkney’s honor. Soror Pinkney, a dedicated Miami historian and preservationist, passed away at age 92, leaving behind a legacy of preserving the history of Miami's Black community. Known as a tireless advocate for honoring Black pioneers, landmarks, and stories, Pinkney saved historic sites such as the Hampton House, the Miami Circle, and Lemon City Cemetery, where she even uncovered her family’s graves. Born and raised in Overtown, she faced and challenged segregation, inspired by her father’s courage, which fueled her lifelong commitment to social justice. As the first Black president of the Dade Heritage Trust, she championed Black and Native American heritage, founded the Lemon City Cemetery Community Corporation, and helped preserve the Hampton House, a vital gathering place for Civil Rights leaders and artists, which reopened in 2015 as a cultural center…
